For many, as winter fades and flowers begin to bloom, the change of the season is a welcomed time.

However, as the weather turns warmer and spring is in the air, so are various seasonal illnesses.

Knowing which illnesses to watch out for and how to protect yourself can help arm you for a healthier and more enjoyable spring season.

Keep reading below for more on this.

Spring sniffles, viruses and more

Spring allergies are one of the most prevalent and widespread illnesses in the spring season. This is also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

As flowers, trees and grass release pollen, many people may experience sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, congestion and runny nose. Sometimes these symptoms can be thought to be a cold. However, allergies usually last longer and do not cause a fever.

Likewise, the common cold is also prevalent during the spring season. And as social activities tend to increase with warmer weather, the chance of exposure to colds can also increase.

Symptoms of a cold include cough, congestion, fatigue and sore throat and are typically less severe than those caused by the flu.

Sinus infections are also common in the spring. These types of infections can occur following a cold or allergies that have been left untreated. Symptoms can include pressure in the face and sinuses, thick nasal discharge, a headache and lack of a sense of smell.

Sinus infections should be treated by a doctor because when left untreated, they can last longer and worsen.

Stomach viruses can also be a common ailment in the spring as people tend to gather more together as the weather warms up. Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea and even dehydration. While usually not cause for concern, stomach viruses can impact children and the elderly more severely.

To protect yourself from these common spring illnesses, it is important to ensure you are getting proper rest and staying hydrated. Further, eating a well-balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables and taking vitamins can also help stave off any spring illnesses.

Further, practicing proper hygiene is key. Be sure you are washing your hands often with soap and water to reduce spreading bacteria. Avoid touching the face – particularly the mouth, eyes and nasal areas, which can be entry points for bacteria.

You should also stay updated on the latest vaccines to protect yourself particularly from respiratory illnesses and stay home if you are not feeling well.

With a little preparation and knowledge, you can set yourself up for a healthy spring season.
