Keeping Your Home Illness-Free This Fall

As the weather turns colder and the sun sets earlier, you know winter is around the corner. But there’s still plenty of fall left before the snow takes over.

And right now, it’s important to keep your home and your family healthy as the holiday season approaches.

November is a good time to take inventory of your home’s hygiene and your immune system (and your family’s).

Keep reading for some simple ways to ensure your home is healthy as fall turns to winter.

Good practices go a long way

First and foremost, take the time to clean your home properly. Be sure to clean high-tough surfaces, including light switches and doorknobs to keep them germ-free.

Also, practice frequent handwashing as hands can be a prime spot for germs. Use soap and water and wash for 20 seconds minimum.

When you feel a cough or a sneeze coming on, be sure to cover your mouth using your arm or a tissue to avoid spreading any germs.

Next, take a look at your home’s ventilation and don’t be afraid to crack windows to ensure good airflow.

Also be sure you are washing bedding and towels frequently using hot water to kill any germs and remove your shoes at the door so you’re not tracking germs inside.

You may also consider a HEPA-equipped vacuum to minimize germs in the air. Likewise, change your HVAC filters as recommended to improve the air quality in your home.

And finally, take care of yourself from the inside out, eating a balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables, lean protein and whole grain. Drink plenty of water and get optimal sleep – seven to nine hours.

And be sure to prioritize exercise, which can boost the immune system.

And if you are sick – stay home!
