Despite the pandemic being five years ago, COVID-19 is still very real and present. And it is a serious illness that can cause people to become very sick and can even lead to hospitalization or death in some cases.

As such, testing for COVID-19 is also still very present.

Symptoms include fever, runny nose, fatigue, cough, muscle aches and digestive issues.

But with the wide range of COVID-19 tests available in stores and online, is it better to test at home or at a doctor’s office?

Read on to learn more.

COVID-19 testing at home

Nowadays, COVID-19 tests are available at nearly any pharmacy or grocery store. And keeping some on hand at home is a wise move.

At-home COVID-19 tests are a good option when you want a quick answer and result – especially if you plan on being around other people.

Most of the at-home tests today are rapid antigen tests and results are available within 15 minutes after testing.

Testing at home is also convenient and private and does not involve drive time or time away from other responsibilities.

But it is important to know that a negative result from an at-home tests is not always accurate, particularly if your symptoms have just begun.

Guidelines today recommend testing twice, 48 hours apart. And be sure to look for the expiration date on your test as an expired test may not be accurate.

At Specialty Urgent Care, our providers can evaluate you and test for other illnesses, including the flu, RSV and strep throat.

This is key so that your treatment is effective. This is vital for everyone, but especially for the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.
